Let’s call a spade a spade. First birthdays are really a big party for the parents to say “we made it through ALIVE!!!’
And so we did.
(And we rocked that party)
We feasted,
and life was sweet!
But while the little princess was holding court, I couldn’t help but think about next year…

Wow – I think your daughter’s first bday party was fancier than some weddings! Congrats on making it through alive…
I am pretty proud of myself. I think motherhood is easier for some people…not so over here I am just glad to be alive!
Oh my God! You are KILLING me with your Martha Stewart-like party throwing abilities! It looks perfect, simply perfect. I may steal your party ideas for a certain little girl who will be turning two in a few short months. But I need details:
1. What is in the dish that’s holding up the popcorn cones?
2. What is in the cups? Is it a drink or a pudding?
3. Did you make those cupcakes?! (Please tell me no or else I’m going to have to move your from “humor blogger” to “ridiculously talented baking/crafting/decorating I wish I was like her” blogger.)
And, also? You are such a tease waving vodka in my face while I’m at work.
So first of all I used to be an event planner, doesn’t that make you feel better? This was my JOB.
1. the popcorn dish has styrofoam on the bottom, and the popcorn cones have sticks to hold them up, then I covered the styrofoam with jelly beans, here is the tutorial I used http://www.hostessblog.com/2009/08/party-diy-paper-treat-cones/
2. the cups have chocolate pudding (made by a friend, she’s super talented)
3. hell to the no I don’t have time to make no cupcakes, but I decorated them
Sorry about the vodka, happy to take shots with you anytime
PS not that you asked, by as a fellow #hippyhotpocket, every item you see on that dessert table I already owned except for the tray holding popcorn
It makes me feel a teeny, tiny, itty bitty bit better. But not really because, seriously. Wow. I have three (THREE!!!!!) parties that I’m planning in April. Only one of which I have a co-planner. You are making me want to somehow ship everything and everyone to your house. Or maybe just ship you here.
And then? You HAD to send me to that blog? LOVE it. How could I have missed it until now??
And really? Even if you didn’t bake the cupcakes, the fondant butterflies are what MADE them.
You and me? We’re going to do shots at some point. Ice cold vodka shots.
PS #hippyhotpockets rock
I too am amazed with the Martha-esque skilz. Loved your intro. Soooo true. Made it through alive. A sense of humour and Vodka no doubt helped. What a good mommy you are. Signing off from CA… still.
Dana
I just realized that without a passport you probably couldn’t fly up here could you? Bummer I would be more than happy to host. Please keep me posted on your journey!
Oh, what a party!! The food, the guests, the Guest of Honor…love how she holds court and they’re all so happy!
And the pic of the two of you? Priceless…
That was the only picture in which I did not look like a hopped up troll (no really I’m being objective, I’m normally photogenic but that day? the picture gods were not with me)
Isn’t’ she outrageous?!? We lined all the kids up for pictures and she just crawls in front of everyone and starts jabbering at them…kid loves an audience, remind you of anyone?
I have to ask, did you make all that food? Because if so can I have an invite to her next birthday or your next party?
Wow, you do birthdays right.
I usually just order pizza and put carrot sticks on the table.
Well we had a LOT of people, 30 adults and 15ish kids. We made two giant breakfast casseroles in the crock pots and did a lox and bagels station. Add to that the blintzes my mother in law and grandmother made for us and we were all set!
I would say that this is only for the first birthday…but I know myself I love to throw a party! And yes you are welcome anytime, you and your seven children (hee hee)
Life was certainly sweet!:) Seems like Aliza had a great time.
She really did, it was such fun!
Your food display and decorations were exquisite! But I really loved the pic of mama & baby best!
I am hoping someone got a picture of all of us (husband, baby and I) we were running around like crazy! And thank you, I totally didn’t even do decorations, the dessert table was it.
That was a first birthday party? I can’t believe that table of dessert treats. That is amazing. What a lucky little girl. Will you throw me a birthday party?
Yes, yes I will. I require a 50% deposit and payment in full one week prior
sorry little bit of (former) event planner humor, couldn’t help myself
What???
NEVER whine to me AGAIN about having a bad day. NEV-ER.
Number one: YOU ARE BEEEYOOOTEEFUL! As in, full of beaty. Just.Stunning.
Number two: your baby girl. I want her.
Number three: Holy cow, but can you take a picture.
Number four: you RAWKED that party throwing shizz.
Number five: vodka
Number five: the food!! Woman, please, you’re talking to a caterer.
I puffy heart you, I do.
#1 Honest to grilled cheezus that was the only decent picture of me out of hundreds…you’ll see once you see me IRL
#2 I know she is SO STINKING cute! makes it easier not to throw her out the windaw
#3 not all pictures are mine! I must give credit to my talented next door neighbor for a lot of those dessert table shots
#4 oh hellz to the yeah, we party like it’s 1988 up in here!
#5 yes vodka is essential at a child’s first birthday
#5 you had number five twice you precious thing you, and yes the food was off the heezy (love when you bring the ghetto girl)
and that should read, “beauty.” not beady. You are full of beauty, not beady ,,xo
Damn woman, but you throw a good party. I personally believe that vodka should be a part of every child’s special day.
Happy birthday to your beautiful girl, and congratulations on making it through the first year!
Thank you! I bet you throw a mean one yourself!
you guys look fantastic and that food looks amazing! what fun!
it really was fun! (vodka helped)
Oh, my god. What a beautiful party.
And what a beautiful Mom and daughter!
weren’t you impressed by the writing on this post? (hangs head in shame)
Okay, I think she is pretty damn fashion minded my dear…and bloody mary’s at party? Astrid better get invited to her 2nd bday! I only served gin and tonics at my baby’s party.
xoxo,t
It looks so nice. Like someone else said fancy like a wedding. Happy Birthday to your little lady.
Very smart. Make the tastiest food exactly when Aliza can’t have it. I like it. By the time she is five, you’ll be having regular pizza parties and she’ll be like, “Don’t we have cakes and popcorn in a beautiful cone at these things,” and you’ll be like, “Mommy does. In her own mommy time.”
Amazing party! It all looks gorgeous (and delicious).
It’s so true that the first birthday is all about saying “We survived!” It looks like you survived beautifully. Congratulations!
Happy Birthday to your beautiful baby girl!!
what a beautiful party for a beautiful girl–happy birthdayd!
That is one yummy looking party!!
Happy Birthday to your sweet daughter and congratulations to you parents on making it through the first year
Congratulations on such a wonderful milestone. What a gorgeous party, marred only by the presence of that Danish swill posing as vodka. As the Good Book says, if it’s not made in Russia you can’t call it vodka. Actually my husband says that, not the Good Book. My husband doesn’t have time to quote the Good Book. He’s too busy drinking vodka.
Her party looks GORGEOUS! It’s a good thing I wasn’t invited. I would have eaten all the purple twizzlers before the party even started. Congrats on Year 1!
Happy birthday to the cutest one year old princess I know!
Baby, you can do the dessert buffet at my parties ANY TIME.
Good HEAVENS that looks gorgeous!
And happy birthday to the beautiful girl!
Sweetbabyjesus, you know how to throw a party!
Oh, wow! How gorgeous was your party????
I was waiting for the pictures – I was.
And I can see you just had a low-key affair with pizza and wings.
You realize you’re well on your way to hiring Beyonce for the 5th year shindig, right?
Beautiful photo of you and little A. Also, I want that bloody mary.
And? Yes, you survived the first year! CONGRATULATIONS!
That party looks amazing! My favorite photo? Bloody mary. Oh, I meant to type you and your baby girl.
Stop distracting me with drinks! Honestly – from one party-throwing lady to another – you rocked it! Can I please come next year?
A first birthday party with vodka? Heck ya. You are my kind of lady.
Happy Birthday!
You are so right. Our invites actually said to come celebrate that we made it through the year!
How do you say “Hostess with the Mostess” in Russian?
You? gorgeous.
Baby? adorable. like i want to eat her feet adorable.
the party? where was my invite?
I think I’m officially caught up now. I want your bloody mary recipe. Unless it includes herring.
What a great party. You inspire me to take a photography class (and a writing class but I don’t think that would help!).
